PRESENTERS/HONOREES

frida escobedo

Frida Escobedo established her eponymous studio in Mexico City in 2006. The studio’s reputation, initially built on the strength of a series of competition-winning projects in her native country—including the renovation of the Hotel Boca Chica (2008), the El Eco Pavilion (2010), and the expansion of La Tallera Siqueiros in Cuernavaca (2012)—has achieved global scope since 2018, when she received the prestigious appointment to design the annual Serpentine Pavilion in London’s Kensington Gardens, becoming the youngest architect to that date to undertake the project. Most recently, she was appointed the lead designer of the new Modern & Contemporary Wing for The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, becoming the youngest and first woman to design a building for the institution. Following her appointment for The Tang Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Frida Escobedo opened a studio in New York City in 2022.

walter hood

Walter Hood is the creative director and founder of Hood Design Studio in Oakland, CA. He is also a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and lectures on professional and theoretical projects nationally and internationally. He is a recipient of the 2017 Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award, 2019 Knight Public Spaces Fellowship, 2019 MacArthur Fellowship, 2019 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, and the 2021 recipient of the Architectural League’s President’s Medal award.

bjarke ingels

Bjarke Ingels founded BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group in 2005 after co-founding PLOT Architects in 2001 and working at OMA in Rotterdam. Bjarke defines architecture as the art and science of making sure our cities and buildings fit with the way we want to live our lives. Through careful analysis of local culture and climate, the ever-changing patterns of contemporary life, and the ebbs and flows of the global economy, Bjarke believes in the idea of information-driven design as the driving force for his creative process. Named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time Magazine in 2016, Bjarke has designed and completed award-winning buildings globally.

paul goldberger

PARK AVENUE ARMORY

The World Around Annual Dinner will be held at New York’s historic Park Avenue Armory historic reception rooms which were restored in 2014 by Herzog and de Meuron. The Veterans Room, where our “In Dialogue” conversation will be taking place was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1881 and stands among the most valuable heritage assets in the United States. The cocktail hour will include a small display by Liberty in the historic ‘Library’ space, and an intimate dinner with some of The World Around’s closest friends and supporters will take place in the Board of Officer’s Room.

CREATIVE PARTNER

LIBERTY

The World Around is proud to partner with Liberty as the Creative Partner for our 2024 annual dinner. For this unique collaboration, the creative team at Liberty began by closely examining the Park Avenue Armory’s historic 19th-century reception rooms, designed by US luminaries Louis Comfort Tiffany and Stanford White. The Liberty team gathered details, researched colors, stained glass, handcrafted mosaics, and hand-turned grates, seeking patterns and shapes throughout Liberty’s historic archives. Their goal was to find symbols, forms, and repeating patterns that resonate with both the Armory’s history and The World Around’s future.

The World Around’s founder and director Beatrice Galilee said: “I wanted the history of arts, design and creativity to run through our event in every way. This partnership brings together the extraordinary history of Liberty’s designs both formally and materially and also connects with the architecture of the space as well as the global, forward-thinking ideals of The World Around. Every element of the materials produced for the evening will be reused and serve to champion the work of designers past and present, as well as bringing so much joy and beauty to the rooms. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the collaboration.”
